Colleagues report that one area of the positive feedback form their recent CQC inspection was how practices embrace campaigns as we had DCBy1, Pick it-Lick it-Stick it, Safeguarding etc posters up and leaflets on display. You might consider displaying Cervical and Prostate screening posters in suitable places such as the patient toilet?

Patient NHS Exemptions:
The BSA have introduced a new App to check patients’ NHS charges exemptions. Last year they introduced “check before you tick” (click before you tick would have been better?) for patients to check if they were entitled to free prescriptions and there was a big media campaign to support this. At a meeting last year with the BSA it was suggested by an LDC member it should be extended to dental exemptions and low and behold they just have!

It is very easy to use and can be loaded onto practice desk tops and Clinipads. If patients are not sure all they have to do is enter their name, date of birth and if they have an easy exemption like Working tax Credits it will ping up in seconds, if more complex they are guided through a set of questions which takes a couple of minutes. If not exempt it signposts them to HC1. Unfortunately it does not identify HC3 exemptions. Hopefully this will avoid some of the fines issued.

BDA launch “was not brought campaign”:
There is a drive to record children who do not attend their appointments as “was not brought” instead of “failed to attend” as it is rarely the child’s fault that they missed the appointment. This is supported by a great youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAdNL6d4lpk

The BDA have produced a toolkit to implement this:

Food for thought – protect a child and consider vulnerable adults too?
